...It wasn't Steve Jobs or Thomas Edison who made me want to be an inventor. I wanted... to be like my brother.

Hiro Hamada, as portrayed in the Baymax manga series, is an adaptation of the film franchise protagonist of the same name.

Background[]

Hiro is born

Hiro Hamada was born to a couple from the city of San Fransokyo. His older brother Tadashi was present when he was born. Some years later, his parents died in a car accident; both of the Hamada brothers attended the funeral and their aunt Cass took them in and raised them, as she was their only legal guardian.

Even as a toddler, Hiro was a genius and proved a theorem that no mathematician was able to solve before. A man approached the Hamada residence, believing it was Tadashi who did this, only to be shocked to find out Hiro was the real genius.

You're awesome

However, due to his great intellect, Hiro was ostracized and bullied at school. Although Tadashi stepped in to protect him, Hiro claimed it was no big deal. Yet, because of this Hiro grew up anti-social and cared more about making machines than friends. Tadashi noticed how Hiro was becoming more of a loner and once built a small aeroplane, taking his brother for a quick ride despite Hiro not wanting to. After the plane ride, Tadashi claimed "their" experiment was a success, which caused Hiro to look up to Tadashi from that point onward and see him as an inspiration, admiring all of his inventions even though his own were also fascinating to Tadashi.

When Tadashi started attending the San Fransokyo Institute of Technology, representatives from other schools approached Cass to let Hiro join their schools, though Hiro had no interest and instead played pranks on the men, much to Tadashi's discontent. Hiro preferred to spend his time doing other activities such as Bot Fighting until Tadashi convinced him to go to SFIT along with him and meet his friends. Yet, Hiro still didn't care about befriending others and grew to dislike Tadashi's group of friends, especially GoGo. In classes, Hiro would also focus on building things for his own amusement instead of paying attention to the teachers.

Personality[]

Hiro is a born genius who aspires to become a great inventor; he undergoes a change in personality throughout the manga. Initially, due to being bullied from a young age and growing up with only his brother and aunt, Hiro is a very shy, reclusive, socially inept and insensitive individual, caring significantly more about machines than real people. Hiro cited Thomas Edison and Steve Jobs as his inspirations, although deep down, his biggest inspiration was his own brother Tadashi, as he was the only person Hiro counted on during his entire childhood and relied very heavily on him because of this. Due to his lack of interaction with other people, Hiro also tended to be rude and sarcastic to others and was rather self-centred, as he himself admitted once after wondering how Tadashi could care so much about helping others.

Eventually, his behavior began to concern Tadashi, who worried about how Hiro would cope when he was not around anymore. Although Tadashi tried to get Hiro to befriend others, Hiro always refused and openly admitted Tadashi was the only person in the world he cared about, even going as far as claiming he doesn't care about helping others and only pretended to because it's what Tadashi liked to do.

Following Tadashi's disappearance in the Silent Sparrow portal, Hiro became more aggressive to Cass when she tried to cheer him up and stayed in isolation inside his bedroom, blaming himself for not apologizing to Tadashi about the way he acted. When Baymax is accidentally activated by Hiro, the robot plays a big role in changing Hiro's personality for the better. Tadashi had built Baymax to help people, but also hoped he would become a friend to Hiro in order to make him less anti-social. Baymax accomplished this and reminded Hiro that Tadashi's friends were there for him, motivating him to ask them for help to find the man who accompanied Tadashi the night he was sucked into the wormhole. However, learning that this man was none other than Dr. Callaghan, Hiro aggressively pummeled him in a rage, claiming it was Callaghan's fault for Tadashi's fate. Baymax stopped Hiro before he could harm the man, upsetting Hiro further since Callaghan escaped.

When Baymax showed Hiro recordings of Tadashi constructing him, Hiro reflected on his actions, realizing that they were not what Tadashi would've wanted and emphasizing how his brother always wanted him to create a better world. Furthermore, Callaghan compares Hiro to himself during his youth, which makes Hiro realize one day he could end up as ruthless as Callaghan especially as the doctor mentions that, just like Hiro said before, he didn't care about other people or hurting them in the process to achieve his goals.

After saving Abigail and reuniting her with her father, Baymax sacrifices himself, getting lost inside the portal. With both Tadashi and Baymax lost, Hiro goes back to having a normal life, accepting Tadashi's friends as his own whilst also pondering about his brother's wishes and maturing because of it. Now instead of caring only about himself, Hiro sets his mind on protecting innocents, being nicer to the people around him, and bringing people happiness to others the way Tadashi would've wanted, with the help of his friends and a rebuilt Baymax.

Yet in his new life, Hiro doesn't lose hope that his brother Tadashi could still be alive within the portal and makes it his mission to find him one day.
